The glamour and glitz of the Jazz Age come to life at Vizcaya, the estate of millionaire industrialist James Deering. From opulent architectural details to an 18th-century French rug and a hand-painted screen by renowned American artist Robert Winthrop Chanler, the sitting room captures James’s enthusiasm for European antiques and the arts.
James Deering never married or had children, but his sprawling winter estate was built with guests in mind. With his friend and artistic director Paul Chaflin, James designed nine lavish bedrooms with distinctive themes. For instance, the Cathay bedroom (above) was inspired by artful chinoiserie.
