Wednesday, October 2

Arrive in Charleston and get settled into The Charleston Place, a luxury hotel in the heart of the downtown historic district. Meet and mingle with your travel companions and Southern Lady editors at an informal evening wine reception at the hotel’s Thoroughbred Club. Dinner will be on your own with our list of top restaurants to try while you’re in Charleston.

Thursday, October 3

Begin the day with breakfast on your own at the hotel. Afterward, our private guide will collect us for a walking tour of the historic district, complete with tales about some of the most fascinating sites in this spectacular city. We’ll end at the Edmonston-Alston House—one of the most beautiful antebellum homes on the Battery, Charleston’s grand seawall and promenade—where we’ll enjoy a light lunch with views of the water.

After a respite at the hotel to relax and refresh, we’ll walk just up the street to the flagship Juliska boutique for a floral workshop, where you’ll sip Champagne as you create your own arrangement in a beautiful Juliska vase that is yours to take home. Tabletop experts will be on hand to help mix and match tableware as we shop the Juliska showroom. Dinner will be on your own with our list of top restaurants to try while you’re in Charleston.

Friday, October 4

Take some free time this morning to explore Charleston with our list of ideas and activities in hand—you might choose to visit the city’s wonderful museums, make the short drive to a riverside estate like Middleton Place, shop the boutiques along King Street, or indulge in a treatment at the Spa at The Charleston Place. After lunch on your own, we’ll gather at the hotel and divide into two groups for our early afternoon adventures. Each group will do the same activities in different order.

Group 1 will walk two blocks to the Charleston Library Society, the oldest such institution in the South at 275 years. There, our guide will lead us through an hour-long private tour of the collections, which include treasures such as an original 17th-century Shakespeare folio and letters from George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. We’ll also get a glimpse at the in-house bindery, where the city’s rarest and most precious volumes are restored. Group 2 will walk two blocks for a private shopping session at one of Charleston’s finest independent clothing boutiques. Afterward, the two groups will switch places to do the opposite activity.

We’ll reconvene for the brief stroll to a pair of the city’s most storied homes, both of which have appeared in the pages of Southern Lady. We’ll first tour the 1772 Heyward-Washington House, built by one of the four South Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence. Afterward, we’ll walk just a few minutes to the 1808 Nathaniel Russell House, the former home of a prominent local merchant, for a tour followed by a wine reception on the premises. Dinner will be on your own with our list of top restaurants to try while you’re in Charleston.

Saturday, October 5

It wouldn’t be a Southern getaway without learning how to make perfect biscuits, and private transport will take us to Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, located in a former officer’s house on the now inoperative Charleston Naval Base. Owner Carrie Morey will share her secrets as she leads a hands-on baking class for our group before we enjoy a full Saturday biscuit brunch.

After we return to the hotel, take some free time to shop, sightsee, or relax. As evening falls, we’ll walk a few blocks to Circa 1886, one of Charleston’s top fine-dining restaurants, where we’ll toast our time together at a farewell dinner in the private upstairs Tack Room of this 19th-century mansion. (Please note that due to the building’s historical nature, stairs are required to reach the space—there is no elevator access.)

Sunday, October 6

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before you check out and depart for home.

Accommodations

The Charleston Place is a 5-star luxury hotel situated on fabulous King Street in the midst of world-class shopping and dining. From here, you’ll be able to walk the charming neighborhood streets of The Battery; visit Charleston City Market, where sweetgrass baskets are made; and browse some of the city’s best independent boutiques. All rooms will be located on the hotel’s club level. The following amenities are included in your stay: lounge with full breakfast; afternoon tea; and private bartender, heavy hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, and after-dinner sweets in the evening.

Is breakfast included in my stay?

Daily breakfast is included with your club-level room.

Are children able to attend this retreat?

All participants must be 18 years old or older to attend this retreat.

I want to bring my travel companion, but they don’t want to participate in the group activities. What can they do?

We offer a “participant + travel companion” package for this very reason! This package allows you to participate in all retreat activities while your travel companion explores Charleston on their own. As part of this package, hotel accommodations, club-level amenities, the welcome reception on arrival night, and the farewell dinner on our final night are included for your companion. Participant + travel companion packages are limited.

What will the weather be like in Charleston in October?

On average, Charleston is still very warm in October, with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s. Rain showers are possible this time of year, though they rarely last long, and we recommend bringing a small umbrella and waterproof outerwear.

What should I plan to wear?

Smart casual attire is fine for the welcome reception and all activities and excursions. Our farewell dinner on October 5 will be dressy (collared shirt and jacket for men, dress or nice pants outfit for women). Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as we’ll be doing a lot of walking and the historic district has some uneven cobblestone streets.

How much physical activity can I expect?

Although our tours and activities will require walking, they are within a small radius around our hotel. (The exception is Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, which we’ll reach by private shuttle). Participants should be able to walk approximately ½ mile in less than 15 minutes and climb a flight of stairs without extreme shortness of breath or other physical ailments. Please note that stairs are required to reach our private dining space at Circa 1886 on Saturday, October 5.

Will we have any free time?

Our activities on October 3 will allow for an early afternoon break, and you will have the entire morning free on Friday, October 4. You’ll also have a window of free time on the afternoon of Saturday, October 5. To help you make the most of your stay in Charleston, we’ll equip you with our list of favorite restaurants, local sights, shopping, and more.

To reserve your spot, email events@southernladymagazine.com. You will be required to pay your deposit within 48 hours. Reservations will be taken in the order in which we receive emails.
