From luxe velvet seating to artful wallpapers, an Alabama home gets a fresh outlook for a family with a love of bold blues and eye-catching greens.

“When we bought the house, it needed everything. And that’s what we wanted,” says homeowner Lindsey DeRieux. Her heart was set on incorporating artwork and keepsakes into an updated design that felt fresh and fun with dashes of her favorite colors, blue and green. Lindsey brought on her friend Keleigh Cleveland of Keleigh Cleveland Interiors to help execute their vision for an improved layout and look that maintained glimpses of the dwelling’s mid-20th-century character, including the wood paneled walls in the living area.

Plans for reconfiguring the main level centered on expanding the living space and kitchen. In place of the original formal living and dining rooms, Keleigh’s team constructed a smaller dining space with an adjoining bar, a powder bath, and a laundry room that includes an office nook. To create rich contrast against the light walls and floors, Keleigh chose a blue-black hue for the doors, the kitchen island, and the accent wall in the new dining room.

Keleigh encouraged Lindsey to step outside her comfort zone, mixing eclectic finishes with timeless pieces. She selected intriguing wallpapers, like the floral pattern in the laundry room, which doubles as Lindsey’s work space. A geometric tile floor rounds out the room’s sense of playfulness while echoing the blues and greens throughout the house.

The process of renovating and layering elements that make a family feel at home is what excites Keleigh about residential design. “It’s fun to work directly with people who are really going to enjoy the space,” she says, “taking their vision and bringing it to life.”
