Classic Comfort

Classic Comfort

A refresh of this traditional suburban Atlanta home by designer Mary McWilliams took time, but it was worth it.

Mary worked with homeowners Joanne and Doug Black on a three-year renovation of their Dunwoody abode. The goal was to “lighten up the rooms while still creating a cozy, livable feel,” Mary says. The update included artwork and wall hangings.

A timeless yet relaxed sensibility begins in the entry hall with a plush settee. A gentle palette predominates: pale blue, cream, and sand, with a few dark notes to ground the airy décor. “I want some spaces to be formal and others to be casual, but always there is a thread that weaves the spaces together,” Mary says. “Comfort is that thread.”

In the dining room, a trumeau mirror provides a visual lift with reflected light while skirted slipper chairs offset the leggy look of the side chairs and trestle-style table.

A mix of patterns and dabs of soft red lend warmth to the family room off the kitchen. Layers of texture come from the stacked-stone fireplace, wooden beams, and fabrics.

Done in similar blue and beige hues as the living and dining rooms, this ultrafunctional space gets bold personality from an upbeat, overscale wallpaper pattern.

A well-thought-out floor plan allows for a laundry area, a workstation, and even a pet nook tucked into the corner.
