Fall is on the horizon, but the Southern heat will surely linger. Treat yourself to a much-needed respite from sweltering temperatures at one of these five mountain getaways that offer top-notch hospitality and cool alpine air.

1. Andiamo! Lodge in Mentone, Alabama

A stone’s throw from Georgia and Tennessee, the six-room Andiamo! Lodge is an adults-only escape complete with upscale accommodations, scenic adventures, and cooking classes taught by award-winning chefs. The exclamation point suits not only the Italian expression, which translates to “let’s go,” but also the enthusiasm of proprietors Colleen Duffley and Steve Carpenter.

It’s with this motto that professional photographer Colleen and chef Steve opened the resort last year. Flowers grown on-site as well as luxury linens add to the ambience, while the burnt orange hue on each door contributes a dash of color that echoes fall’s changing scenery. Nearby, the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway is one of Alabama’s most scenic routes with lookouts perfect for leaf-peeping in autumn and panoramic views year-round.

An oasis on Toxaway Mountain, Southern Highlands Reserve is a stunning natural forest that will make your spirits soar. Wander through the spectacular Wildflower Labyrinth and take in captivating native-plant species from colorful azaleas to a tree that supports endangered flying squirrels. Designed by renowned landscape architect W. Gary Smith, this privately owned garden is open by reservation only April through October.

To experience the preserve and other perks of the area, book your stay at the only public hotel on the shores of Lake Toxaway, The Greystone Inn. Enjoy fishing, tennis, golf, and water activities in addition to the resort’s excellent restaurant and spa. Halfway between the popular resort towns of Cashiers and Brevard, venturing out for antiquing or local dining also is a breeze.

As part of this year’s “Southern College Towns” travel series, we shared our favorite reasons to visit the home of Virginia Tech in our July/August 2023 issue. Whether historic architecture or artsy culture pique your interest, Blacksburg delights at every turn—from eclectic shopping to a robust slate of festivals, performances, and sporting events.

Nestled between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, the city’s proximity to the Appalachian Trail lures visitors seeking both easy outings and challenging treks. The core of Blacksburg seems to blend right into Virginia Tech’s central campus. Make time to tour the school’s Hahn Horticulture Garden, which spreads across 6 acres divided into a series of smaller gardens designed around particular themes.

Walking tours of Blacksburg include stops like the Alexander Black House & Cultural Center, a stately Queen Anne Victorian that serves as headquarters for the Blacksburg Museum & Cultural Foundation. Photo by Mac Jamieson.

Seasonal breakfast and dinner menus, in addition to chef-prepared picnics, make for a superb dining experience. Current owners Annie and David Colquitt have carried on the founding couple’s legacy of hospitality and restfulness as they’ve updated the sumptuous accommodations, built a spa, and added an outdoor hot tub with an amazing view.

5. Rome, Georgia

Like its European ancestor, Georgia’s Rome is rich in history, culture, and high-elevation splendor—with the congenial charm of a small Southern town. The burg sprawls across seven hills at the convergence of three rivers, making all kinds of water sports popular pastimes. A thriving downtown touts specialty boutiques and eateries that capture the community’s strong sense of camaraderie.
