Past meets present in this Georgia home where interior designer Carter Kay layered fine antiques, family treasures, and timeless fabrics to highlight an array of handsome architectural features—from exquisite millwork to Mediterranean-style columns.
Designer Carter Kay gave the couple’s prized collections of art, books, pottery, and porcelain prominence throughout the house to create a mix of seasoned comfort and present-day sophistication. “Antiques and today’s furniture bring out the best in each other,” says Carter.
An inherited tapestry drapes gently on the floor between the doorways to the kitchen and the breakfast area. Sculptural custom gates on either side allow family pets a clear view of the living room while limiting access as needed.
A variety of wood tones contribute to the dining room’s cozy elegance. Boasting an artful patina, Mediterranean-style columns in the doorway frame the balanced composition of traditional, transitional, and modish touches.
For the primary bedroom, Carter chose a pale shade of taupe for the walls, trim, and ceiling to envelop the space and set a tranquil tone. The headboard and dust skirt are upholstered in wool tweed laced with linen and silk, which offer a subtle sheen. At the foot of the bed, a leather-topped iron bench contrasts beautifully with plush throw pillows finished with delicate details.
