A thriving, artistic community and an illustrious past make this Mississippi escape much more than a sleepy beach town.
Tucked away from the glitz of nearby casinos and nestled along Biloxi Bay’s eastern shore, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, beckons travelers in search of a quiet coastal getaway. Live oak trees line the streets of historic downtown as stately symbols of residents’ dedication to preserving the natural surrounds.
Stroll beneath the shade of these towering guardians and head south on Washington Avenue until your feet find the white sand of Front Beach and the waters of the Gulf. With a history spanning three centuries, it’s no surprise Ocean Springs has attracted an array of interesting residents who have influenced its vibrant character.
Walking distance from historic downtown and the beach, The Inn at Ocean Springs offers guests a cozy night’s rest and a glimpse of local artwork. Each room showcases the work of Southern painters and potters, with featured artists changing throughout the year.
Wander through galleries and shops on Washington Avenue, and stop by The Shed Barbeque & Blues Joint for hearty Southern selections. Owners Brett and Brad Orrison and their sister, Brooke Lewis, have channeled their love of ribs, rubs, and sauces into an award-winning family business.
Order an artisan beverage at Finest Grind Coffee House. The shop also satisfies hungry patrons with their tasty paninis and signature salads. Don’t forget to sample the ever-changing seasonal menu at Vestige. Chef and Ocean Springs native Alex Perry strives to give diners an unforgettable culinary experience.
The decadent and delightful French Kiss Pastries is known for showstopping custom cakes and serves delicious European-inspired pastries and desserts, as well as fresh daily lunch specials.
Regardless of the season, travelers won’t want to miss the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, which commemorates the life and art of renowned 20th-century painter Walter Inglis Anderson and his brothers, James McConnell Anderson and Peter Anderson. The museum’s permanent collection features ceramics, watercolors, oil paintings, and more. Local landmark Shearwater Pottery was founded in 1928 by Peter Anderson, the namesake of the town’s fall arts and crafts fest—Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. The Anderson family’s artistic legacy lives on as children and relatives of the brothers continue to create distinctive earthenware that’s both beautiful and functional.

Whether you’re seeking a leisurely journey through history or a taste of this city’s modern-day allure, Ocean Springs has plenty to offer those who discover her storied shores. Spend the day exploring downtown by bike or on foot, then heed the rhythmic call of the waves inviting you to marvel beachside as the sun descends, a sight as unforgettable as this utopic town.
