Lowcountry Mix

Low-Country MixTwo expatriate families find common ground turning an uninhabited Hilton Head property into a new nest for a growing young family.

Before joining J. Banks Design, Sharon Clelandran ran a successful design firm in her native Ireland. “The property was purchased by a young couple from California expecting their first child,” Sharon says. “They wanted a very elegant Lowcountry-style home that was conducive to family entertaining. And because she’s English, we had a different approach to the design.” But they worked together to achieve a warm, relaxing home.

Since the family loves to entertain, Sharon gave them vibrant spaces to gather and converse. With oyster shells cascading in tiers, the dining room chandelier makes a great conversation piece and is a nod to the home’s Hilton Head locale. The grass cloth walls and sisal rug adds a cozy, textural twist to an otherwise traditional space.

For the master bedroom and bath, which were completely remodeled, Sharon designed a serene setting with an eclectic mix of modern and classic European influences. A modern painting done by a family friend hangs above the tub in the master bath.

In the guest bedroom, the homeowners wanted a tropical West Indies feel, which is accomplished with textured vinyl wallcovering resembling grass cloth, a canopy, and nautical lamps.

A linen headboard and simple bedding keep the master bedroom serene and allow custom end tables and a mirrored vanity to shine.

Mirrored furnishings find their place in this setting, reflecting abundant natural light from the room’s large windows.
