Ocean-Inspired Place Card How-To

Coastal plate setting

In the balmy heat of summer, channel the relaxing appeal of the ocean with a coastal-themed table setting. To welcome guests to their seats, a place card framed with a gentle wave motif and a duo of sand dollars echoes the beachy charm. Follow our tutorial to recreate this easy yet elegant entertaining touch for a dinner party.

Step 1: In pencil, softly sketch the name of your guest onto a white place card or trimmed cardstock.

Step 2: Using a light hand, gently erase the name, leaving a subtle guide to go over in watercolor later.

Step 3: Generously add water to a blue shade of watercolor and then lightly paint the perimeter of the place card. To get an overlaid effect, wait for the first layer to dry before painting over with a slightly darker version of the blue used first. You can vary the shape and design of each place card to mimic lolling waves along the shoreline.

Step 4: Add water to a yellow or light brown shade, reminiscent of sand. Paint over the name you sketched earlier in a steady, smooth motion to keep the paint from overlapping in spots.
