Dear Friends,
There is something wonderfully fitting about beginning this new chapter with autumn—a season that reminds us that change can be both beautiful and deeply rooted in tradition.
For nearly three decades, Southern Lady has celebrated gracious living, meaningful gatherings, timeless homes, unforgettable recipes, and the extraordinary women who inspire us all. It is a legacy built by our founder, Phyllis Hoffman DePiano, whose vision was never simply to create a magazine, but to create a place where beauty, hospitality, and creativity could flourish.
Growing up, we had the extraordinary privilege of watching Southern Lady come to life around our family dinner table, in Mom’s sketches and notes, and through countless conversations about the women she hoped to inspire. She was in her mid-forties when she dreamed of creating a magazine that reflected the grace, warmth, and generosity she believed defined Southern women. Looking back now, it’s remarkable to realize that we find ourselves at that very same stage of life. It feels less like coincidence and more like an invitation to honor what she began while thoughtfully preparing it for the generations still to come.
One of the greatest lessons Mom taught us is that tradition isn’t something we preserve by standing still. She often shared that her vision of a Southern Lady was different from her own mother’s—and she believed that was exactly as it should be. Every generation brings its own style, its own perspective, and its own way of expressing hospitality while remaining rooted in the timeless values that define us.
If Mom were writing this letter today, we think she’d remind us that change isn’t something to fear; it is the very thing that allows traditions to endure. She believed every generation should leave its own meaningful mark while honoring those who came before. I like to think she’d see this new chapter not as a departure from her vision, but as its natural continuation.
With this Autumn issue, we aren’t turning away from the magazine she created; we’re embracing the very philosophy she lived. Southern Lady has been thoughtfully reimagined as a luxurious quarterly, with a larger format, richer paper, and expanded editorial designed to be collected, displayed, and revisited long after the season has passed.
“Tradition isn’t something we preserve by standing still.
Under the creative leadership of Editor-in-Chief Melissa Sturdivant Smith, alongside the remarkable team she leads with vision and heart, every page has been elevated to create an experience as beautiful to hold as it is to read. You’ll continue to discover the gracious entertaining, timeless recipes, and beautiful homes, gardens, and traditions you’ve always loved, while also finding inspiring stories of accomplished women, celebrated entrepreneurs, exceptional makers, refined style, unforgettable travel, and fresh ideas that celebrate life in the South today.
These changes were made with one purpose in mind: to create a magazine worthy of your coffee table, your keepsake shelf, and the traditions you create with family and friends. We want every issue to feel less like something to simply read and more like something to savor—an enduring source of inspiration you’ll return to throughout the season.
As Phyllis’s sons, this moment feels deeply personal. We don’t see ourselves as the publishers of this magazine. We simply see ourselves as the children of a Southern lady who poured her heart into these pages, and we consider it one of life’s greatest privileges to help carry her passion forward alongside Melissa and the extraordinary team bringing this vision to life today.
Whether you’ve welcomed Southern Lady into your home since the very beginning or this is your very first issue, thank you for allowing us to be part of your life. We are honored to continue a story that began nearly three decades ago, and we’re grateful to have you beside us as we write its next chapter.
Thank you for turning the page with us. We can’t wait to share what’s ahead.
With gratitude,
Brian Hart Hoffman

What this means for your subscription
A change like this raises practical questions, and you deserve clear answers. Here is exactly what is different and what it means for the subscription you already have.
What happened to what I already paid?
Nothing was lost. Any amount you had already paid toward issues you hadn’t yet received was carried forward as a credit toward your new subscription. That credit is applied automatically — there is nothing you need to do to claim it.
If you’d like us to confirm the details of your account, email us at CustomerService@hoffmanmedia.com and we’ll be glad to walk you through it.
Why is the subscription more than it was?
Southern Lady has been relaunched as a quarterly keepsake edition: a larger magazine, printed on premium paper with higher-quality reproduction, with enhanced photography and expanded editorial. It is made to be collected and revisited rather than replaced every few weeks, and it costs considerably more to produce.
The subscription is $80 a year for four seasonal issues — Autumn, Holiday, Spring, and Summer — which works out to $20 an issue, compared with $25 on the newsstand.
What do I actually get in each issue?
The gracious entertaining, timeless recipes, and beautiful homes and gardens you have always loved, alongside stories of accomplished women, celebrated entrepreneurs and makers, refined style, and unforgettable travel — in a larger format with more pages than before.
When will my next issue arrive?
The Autumn issue — the first of the new quarterly editions — has already shipped, so it may already be on its way to you. Issues now arrive seasonally, which means the Holiday issue follows about three months later.
If your Autumn issue hasn’t reached you, email CustomerService@hoffmanmedia.com and we’ll track it down.
Is the digital edition included?
No — a print subscription covers the four printed seasonal issues. Digital editions are offered separately.
The new format isn’t what I want. What are my options?
We understand a bigger, quarterly magazine isn’t what every longtime reader was hoping for, and we’d rather help you find the right fit than lose you altogether. Hoffman Media publishes a number of titles at different price points, and our team is glad to help you choose one. Email CustomerService@hoffmanmedia.com and tell us what you love most about Southern Lady.
